In many clinics, practice instructors not only have to impart intercultural competence in the care of sick people with a migrant background to their colleagues, but are also particularly tasked with introducing foreign employees or even students. In a study by Grace Lugert-Jose on the satisfaction of Filipino nursing staff in Germany (2022), just under half of those surveyed (with a predominantly or strong agreement) indicated that they were adequately trained for their current job. Often, there is a false expectation on both sides and disappointments occur, which both the core team and the foreign nursing staff must overcome with the support of the practice instructors.
The following points can complicate the usual approach of practice instructors and stand in the way of as conflict-free, effective instruction as possible:
- Inadequate German language skills
- Scant knowledge of technical language,
- Communication problems in communication,
- Different working behaviour,
- Different curricula and training paths of the countries of origin
Irritations are often unavoidable, because despite great effort the person being trained reacts in an unfamiliar way. Misunderstandings occur, errors by those being guided, sometimes anger or resignation of the instructor - and ultimately frustration and insecurity on both sides, which is good for no one.
Patience, sensitivity, and tolerance are needed, but above all intercultural knowledge, to understand that people from other cultures may communicate and act differently.
Emphasis
- How can we succeed in remaining friendly and motivated so that both sides benefit?
- Which aspects promote intercultural communication and which are obstructive?
- Which methods and steps should be implemented in the workplace?
- How can a practice instructor ensure that all participants achieve satisfactory results?
- Exchange of experiences and best practices
